I modified the fifteenth chapter of Confucius’s classic Doctrine of the Mean (《中庸》), carving directly into the woodblocks and leaving only the shapes of mouths. In this passage, “ghosts and spirits” are depicted as intangible forces—ever-present yet imperceptible. This unseen authority governs proper behavior, particularly through rituals performed with reverence and obedience.

Chips of wood removed from the block were saved as evidence. Between the original and modified versions, a division emerged in the form of a mountain—symbolized by mushrooms and jujubes, and constructed through layers of translation.
